The Golden Gate Community School programs provide successful learning experiences for all students in an alternative education environment. Staff will assist students in reaching their academic and career goals by implementing teaching strategies and techniques which will enable students to succeed personally, socially, and educationally in society today.

Golden Gate Community School is an alternative education program serving the academic needs of students during their enrollment. All courses taken and credits earned are transferable to the student's home district. The school's main purpose is to prepare the students to return to their home districts.

The mission of the CCCOE Court and Community School is to provide quality instruction to all students while promoting socially responsible and respectful behavior in a supportive and safe environment. The following expected learning results will have the students able to:

• Exhibit appropriate work habits and behavior
• Show respect for peers and staff
• Exhibit self-control and accept guidance
• Develop life long learning goals

Golden Gate Community School provides the following learning opportunities:

• Complete a course of study leading to a high school diploma.
• Develop individual potential and an appreciation of self and others while learning to become productive citizens.
• Develop individual talents, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the knowledge to succeed.

Golden Gate offers an Independent Study Program plus 8 classes in the following cities:

• Martinez - 1 class
• Rodeo - 1 class
• Brentwood (grades 6-8) - 1 class
• Brentwood (grades 9-12) - 1 class
• Pittsburg - 3 classes

School hours vary at each site. The program runs Monday through Friday, and follows the CCCOE approved holiday and vacation schedule. Most sites operate a summer school program.

Parent Involvement

There are several ways for parents to become involved with the school. At the time a student enters the program, the student, parent and the classroom teacher meet to review the student transcript, design an Individual Learning Plan, and go over the rules of the program. If the student is eligible for Special Education services, the instructional support teacher is included in the meeting. There are also frequent phone calls both parent and staff initiated during the student ‘s enrollment. Parents can be invited or request to spend the day in the classroom. At the end of each semester, a transition meeting is held with the parent, student, principal, teacher and local school district representative. The purpose of the transition meeting is to review the student’s progress, plan for the next semester, and to determine if the student will return to the local district.

Enrollment Information Procedures

A referral form along with transcripts, immunizations, IEP (and any special education information), and the terms of expulsion faxed or mailed to the Golden Gate Community School Office will start the enrollment process. A Referral form must be filed with the Golden Gate Community School office before the enrollment process may begin.

Referral Process

Students are considered for the Golden Gate Community School when referred by the district for one or more of the reasons below:

1. District students whose needs have been reviewed by the District School Attendance Review Board (SARB), or whose parents have requested attendance in the Golden Gate Community School.
2. Expelled students who may no longer attend district schools.
3. District students who have been recommended by the Probation Department as informal probationers will be carried as an at risk student if agreed to by all parties.

Since each student previously attended a local district school program, Golden Gate Community School program seeks to transition the students back to an appropriate educational setting upon completion of their contractual requirements. The Community School program is student-centered and adapted to meet the student's individual needs.

Initial Student Contact

After the referring agency has completed the referral process and sent the paperwork to the main office, an enrollment appointment is set up. Interview dates will generally be set for the first available date.

Delta Vista High School

Delta Vista High School is one of two Court School Programs operated by the Contra Costa County Office of Education. It is located the at Orin Allen Youth Rehabilitation Facility in Byron.

Our expected student learning results are:

• Use technology
• Improve academic performance
• Exhibit appropriate work habits and behavior
• Show respect for peers and staff
• Exhibit self-control and accept guidance
• Develop life long learning goals

The school program is comprised of six multi-subject classrooms and one specialized classroom offering:

• English Language Arts
• Woodshop
• Special Education/Reading Intervention
• History/Social Science
• Pre-Algebra/Algebra
• Earth Science/Life Science
• Physical Education

Students are taught by credentialed staff and receive standards based academic coursework. Young men who earn all of the necessary credits and pass the California High School Exit Exam are eligible to receive their high school diplomas. This site also runs a work experience program where student jobs are assigned on the facility and require work related instruction with one of the school’s teachers.

Delta Vista High School screens and prepares students for the General Education Development Test (GED). Eligible students participate in testing preparation activities and a qualified employee of the GED testing programs conducts on site testing monthly. Our campus also provides a special education individualized support program and tutor services.

Delta Vista High School is WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accredited.

Mt. McKinley School

Mt. McKinley School is one of two Court School Programs operated by the Contra Costa County Office of Education. It is located in the Juvenile Hall facility in Martinez.

 

 

Mt. McKinley School Profile

Mt. McKinley School is part of the Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) that provides educational services to more than 55,000 students annually.  The school is located at two sites. The main site is within Juvenile Hall in Martinez, California and serves students who are considered “at risk” and are either incarcerated or in some phase of the judicial process. Students come from the 18 school districts within Contra Costa County. The second site is located within the Southwest Key Facility. This site serves youth who enter the United States without parents or adult guardians and have been detained by immigration officials.

Mt. McKinley School also offers the educational program for two placement units run by Contra Costa Probation. The Girls in Motion Program (GIM) and the Youthful Offender Treatment Program for boys (YOTP) are placement programs in which the residents are sentenced by the court for up to nine months. In these programs students can earn their credits for a high school diploma, as well as receive guidance and treatment by the Probation staff.

Staffing

Mt. McKinley School is comprised of eight classrooms on the living units with two overflow classes. There are 11 certificated classroom teachers, two certificated special education teachers, three classified tutors, two classified instructional assistants, and three classified special education instructional assistants. Our office staff includes one classified administrative assistant, one classified data technician, and one principal.

Instructional Program

Mt. McKinley School is part of the Court and Community School Program which is a Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accredited program.

Mt. McKinley School students have an average instructional day of at least 260 minutes and every Wednesday is a minimum day to allow teacher training and collaboration. At the Southwest Key facility the students have an average instructional day of 243 minutes and one day a week is a minimum day to allow for assessing new students. The focus of the Mt. McKinley School is to provide curricular and academic opportunities, while modifying behavior with the ultimate goal being successful transition to the students’ next educational placement.
 
Students in the school take grade appropriate academic courses. Those in high school work on earning high school credits and preparing to take the high school exit exam. 
The program follows the state curriculum adoption timelines and frameworks so that there is always a continuous focus on curriculum development. There is a Program-wide Math Matrix and English Language Arts Scope and Sequence which all teachers follow that addresses math and English standards. In addition we have a math and English CAHSEE Prep computer program.  This program targets commonly missed CAHSEE standards.  Staff receive ongoing in-service for these programs as well as numerous English Language Arts and English Language Development (ELA) trainings.  All curricula foci are directly linked to standards achievement, California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) preparation, basic skills remediation, and the completion of credits.

Special Programs

Special Education services are offered in an Instructional Support Program model. Since students need to remain on the living units at Juvenile Hall, identified students are served in their classrooms by special education staff in a push-in model.
In addition, there is a student study team process to explore and problem solve in order to help students who are experiencing difficulties or who have been referred for special education services.

In our attempt to meet the needs of all learners our program has adopted a Reading Intervention Program (REACH) for low-level readers. Students referred for the REACH program receive assistance on their word attack skills in a small group setting.

All classroom teachers are certified to work with English Language Learners within their classrooms. In addition, all English Learners are administered the CELDT Test and participate in a standards aligned English Language Development program.

As part of the WASC process the staff at Mt. McKinley School assisted with revising the Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs) during the 2008 school year. They are as follows.

Other Resources - Scholarships and Grants

Juvenile Hall Auxiliary - The Juvenile Hall Auxiliary offers financial aid to students who were or are in placement under the jurisdiction of the Court in the amounts of at least $300 per quarter or $500 per semester.  The money is to be used for post high school education in the academic, vocational, or specialized training fields.  We expect our students to commit themselves to a full-time educational program.  To continue to qualify for the program each semester, the student must complete a full-time class load and maintain a 2.0 GPA.

CCCBA's Court Scholarship Program - If you are an adult or juvenile currently residing in Contra Costa County who has been through the criminal justice system resulting in a conviction, you may be eligible for our Court Scholarship program.

This program provides monetary awards up to $2,500.00 for continued schooling to help you gain the education you need to get ahead.
